Our Tradition

Located at the mouth of Black Rock Harbor, Black Rock Yacht Club (BRYC) offers immediate access to the beauty of the Long Island Sound. With our private pier and mooring field, members can easily set sail and explore the open water.

BRYC is home to a vibrant sailing community, featuring a full calendar of racing, cruising, and on-water activities for Adults and Youth. Whether you're crewing for Wednesday Night Racing or enjoying a relaxed, social Friday evening Chowder Race, there's always an opportunity to get on the water. For those looking to learn, our Ideal 18 sailing clinics provide hands-on instruction and our fleet is available year-round.

From seasoned racers and leisurely cruisers to powerboaters and beginners, BRYC offers a welcoming environment for all who love the water.

Set sail with us and be part of the tradition

While most of the club is quiet this time of year the sailing community at BRYC is in full swing. Every Sunday from Jan. 25 - April 26 sailors from Black Rock, Fayerweather and Pequot Yacht Clubs will compete in the BRYC harbor for the Ideal 18 Black Rock Harbor Frostbite Championship.

Teams of two compete on four Sundays throughout the season, with the top five teams competing in the championship on Sunday, April 26. We sail in the club’s Ideal 18 – a Bruce Kirby designed keelboat which sails like a dinghy but more stable and forgiving.

If you are interested in sailing and would like more information, please email Bernie Prat ([email protected]).  Use this link to register and sign the waiver.

If you don’t have a partner, we can pair you up with someone. We also have a substitute list for those that can’t commit to the full season Sundays but would like to get out sailing when they can.

In conjunction with Fayerweather Yacht Club, Black Rock Yacht Club hosts a Wednesday Night Racing series. WNR is a spinnaker and non-spinnaker class series. The courses vary based on conditions of the day. The PHRF series is scored on adjusted time with the boats with highest average place winning the series. While the races are competitive, all members are welcome.
